Autumn Run

Today's Run: 4.0 miles
Run Time: 42:35 minutes
Total Miles to Date: 856.3 miles

Thoughts on the Run:

Whew! What a run. We're getting ready for vacation at the cabin.

I'll admit, I had my fair share of excuses ready when I woke up this morning. The temperature was in the 20s Fahrenheit and I had just run last night for 35 minutes on an incline treadmill.

"It's too cold."

"I'm going on vacation, so why not relax."

That's the routine. But then I realized that none of those excuses really held up to scrutiny. It's going to be cold for awhile. I'm going to be on vacation for a week, and like the strategy in the Holiday Survival Guide, I intend to train on vacation.

So, I put on my layers: t-shirt with a long-sleeved sweat shirt over it, shorts with long sweat pants, cap to cover my head and ears. I used some socks for gloves (don't have my running gloves yet) and wore a bandanna over my mouth to help breathe in the cold.

I started out feeling stiff but fortunately the layers kept me from feeling cold. It was low 30s when I started. After going up a long hill I realized the bandanna wasn't going to work. I had it doubled over and while my breath was warm, it was also tough to breathe and I was gasping. I took it off and was surprised that the cold air didn't feel too harsh. The bandanna kept my neck warm.

By the time I reached the turn around point two miles in, I was warm and sweating so the sock-gloves and bandanna went into my pockets and I took off the sweat shirt and tied it around my waist. Had a nice, steady run home and just enjoyed the sunshine, the cool air, and the beautiful color of the leaves.

I finished the run feeling refreshed and glad that I did not give into excuses but earned my right to relax tonight on my first day of vacation!

Warmly,

Jeremy Likness
